2015 Nexus Alcatel's $250 Idol 3 , Now Google sold the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5, two phones with all of the above at very attractive prices from around $200-$399 unlocked. Then in 2014, Google switched gears with the Nexus 6. It's an excellent phone, but its price isn't very Nexus-like: $649 for an unlocked model.

And Fans got upset, but Google's reasoning was this: Android no longer needed a hero phone anymore; the 4 and 5 did the job as blueprints for device makers and now its mission was complete.

The 2015 Nexus Alcatel's $250 Idol 3 even looks like a Nexus phone. Its gentle curves, slim 0.29-inch profile and beautiful high-res 5.5-inch display with full HD resolution feel like the natural evolution of the Nexus 4's industrial design. The Idol 3's plastic is brushed to appear as if it's made of metal. It certainly no Galaxy S6, but it's not flimsy, either. The phone's also really light.

For the Nexus We have only two complaints about the design: The power button is located too high up on the left side of the phone. The same goes for the volume rocker on the right side. They're both positioned in a way that makes reaching them difficult. If there's one thing we learned with the LG G Flex 2, it's that having the newest and fastest chips don't define a smartphone anymore. A faster processor with more cores and tons of RAM might look great on a comparison chart, but they don't always tell the whole story in real-world usage.

The 2015 Nexus Alcatel's $250 Idol 3 has an octa-core Qualcommm Snapdragon 615 processor, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage (expandable up to 128GB via microSD). Geeks will point and sneer at its meager specs, but to the truth is, it's powerful enough to do everything with aplomb.

For the most part, the Idol 3 runs a near stock version of Android 5.0.2 Lollipop. Unlike other phones, Alcatel didn't modify the user interface in any relevant way. I actually like the Fisher-Price look to the icons and the animation changes — they're playful and approachable.

The phone is speedy and while I did notice a few hiccups during my testing, they didn't impact usage. (Every phone freezes up every once in a while.) All you need to know is this phone is butter-smooth. The 2,910 milliamp-hour (mAh) battery is also a top performer — it lasted a full day and sometimes a day and a half on a single charge.

It's not cheap, and the interface isn't as clean and clear as on the Samsung Galaxy S6 range, but that could all change soon - in which case, this is one of the most fully featured phones that rewards those willing the pay the premium and put the time in to learn its powers.

2. Sony Xperia Z3

The Xperia Z3 is a phone that offers the best of Sony with some really polished tweaks thrown in for good measure. The screen is one of the brightest around and really benefits from Bravia technology, and the longer battery life embarrasses a number of other big smartphones around at the moment.

We do expect more from the camera, and the black bezels above and below the display ruin the aesthetic somewhat, but the ability to Remote Play your PS4 more than makes up for it - it's a really cool feature and means you can keep gaming while someone else is hogging the TV.

The Z3 is a brilliant phone with a few rough edges - but Sony's also great at bringing the cost of its handsets down, so this represents really good value for money for a flagship.

Google's latest Nexus is a phone that moves away from the usual 'super cheap superphone' and into phablet territory with its latest offering. The good news is the screen is also supercharged: massive at 6 inches, it's also got a stunning QHD resolution.

You'll always be getting the latest updates to Google's Android OS with this one, and while it's certainly something you'd have to use two handed (make sure you're fine with that before buying, as it's put a lot of people off that we've shown it too) it's tremendous display, premium specs and great use of Android 5.0 Lollipop make one of the best phablets to date.

It's not cheap, but it's the best Nexus ever made. And, when you think about it, you're not going to need to hold onto your money, as you'll require both hands to grab onto this two-handed monster.

4. Sony Xperia Z3 Compact

Less powerful with a lower-res screen than its bigger brother, the Z3 Compact still uses most of the high-end specs, fuses them with things like Remote Play and the 20.7MP camera, and does it all at a really low cost for a phone of this power.

The 4.7-inch display makes this one of the best phones to hold and use in day to day life, and it's also got a brilliantly long-lasting battery too, so if you're not a fan of the gargantuan models on show, there's a lot to love with Sony's mini flagship.

The best of Sony in a smartphone - if that's what you're after, this is the phone to go for. It's the ergonomics and the price that impress, and while it's not quite got the spec sheet of the main Z3, it feels a lot more polished.

5. HTC One M9

HTC took the One M8's design and refined it for 2015, creating a truly stunning smartphone. The internals have been upgraded as well: Qualcomm's octa-core Snapdragon 810 SoC; the camera goes from the M8's 4-megapixel snapper to 20 megapixels; and HTC has added a host of features to its Sense Android launcher software.

It's a beautifully crafted and highly competent smartphone, just like last year's HTC One M8. But it's only a small improvement on the M8.

6. Samsung Galaxy Alpha

The Galaxy Alpha has Android 4.4.4 (KitKat) onboard, complete with Samsung’s TouchWiz overlay. This comes with a host of extra features – some of which are useful, some less so – and is rammed with preinstalled apps, plus Samsung’s own app store.

One of the more interesting preloads is the much-hyped S Health app, which comprises a number of tools for keeping track of your activity, food intake and general well-being.

It makes use of the accelerometer in the phone to count your steps; will estimate the calories you’ve burned in doing so based on your height, weight, age and sex; and provides a tool to help you track the number of calories you’ve consumed day by day.

7. Motorola Moto E 2015

The Moto E in 2015 comes with Android 5 Lollipop installed as standard, and Motorola’s rather helpful migration app is preinstalled as well, which makes it quick and easy to get up and running. Indeed, it’s pleasing to see Motorola not opting to bring a bloated version of Lollipop to the Moto E. The temptation to bundle unnecessary apps would be too great for many other manufacturers, especially for such an affordable handset, but Motorola’s additions are genuinely useful.

The included “Moto” app learns how you use your phone, and lets you set automatic adjustments to notification frequency based on times of day. It also provides a useful notification system similar to the app AcDisplay, turning on the screen to show you when a new notification comes in. It’s not always ideal, but since the Moto E has no notification light, it’s really the only way to know if there’s something waiting for you.

8. LG G3 2015

The LG G3 became in 2015 and has its 5.5in display into a chassis that measures 74.5mm wide – a mere 3.6mm wider than the G2. It’s a big phone, but by no means unwieldy.

And LG has clearly been busily sprucing up its new handset. The rear looks like it’s crafted from brushed metal, but it’s actually 100% plastic. It doesn’t look or feel cheap, however: the rear arcs from edge to edge in single, gentle curve, and it’s framed by a sliver of flattened metal running around the handset’s edges. Combined with the smooth, semi-gloss rear, the G3 feels great in the hand.

The Moto G2 4G still has a decent display. The resolution may not raise eyebrows any more, but 720 x 1,280 still looks sharp to our eyes on a 5in screen, and delivers a pixel density of 294ppi. In short, you'll only see the pixels if you look really hard at it.

And the important thing is that the quality of the screen remains a strong point. There's plenty of contrast and colour saturation, with a luminance of 441cd/m2 it’s as bright as the original Moto G, while a contrast ratio of 1,046:1 ensures onscreen images have a decent amount of “pop” and solidity. Colour accuracy is also reasonable, with an average delta E of 2.45, so movies, photos and games all look fantastic.

The Samsung Galaxy Note Edge looks like no other smartphone on the market. Instead of a screen that’s flat and contained within borders, the right side of the display rolls steeply away from the flat face of the main display, forming a curved strip of screen along the edge of the phone.

It sounds gimmicky - and to a certain extent it is. Before we’d heard of the Note Edge, it certainly wasn’t the feature we’d been dreaming of; we’d much rather have a battery that lasts a bit longer, or a phone that charges itself up kinetically - or something else equally useful.
